If you are going on a "closed loop cruise" then you do not need a passport as the other person here said. A closed loop cruise is when you both begin and end your cruise at the same port. Since you’re asking about such a short cruise of only 3 days I’m certain this is the case for you.
You will need a birth certificate and official photo ID such as a drivers license. The birth certificate cannot be a simple copy of the original. It "must" be the original or a certified copy from the county of your birth.
A passport is only required if your cruise originates and ends in different ports. These rules only apply for United States based cruises by the way. If you begin a cruise in another country you’ll need to find out what their rules are.
I have been on several cruises out of 3 different ports in Florida and I’ve used my birth certificate and drivers license for each one. My most recent cruise was to the Bahamas 2 weeks ago out of Jacksonville, FL.
If you take a cruise that stops In Nassau I highly recommend taking a cab and spending the day on Cabbage Beach. It’s beautiful and you’ll see some photos of it in my photostream.
If you are a U.S. citizen AND the cruise departs and returns to the SAME U.S. port you do not need a passport. You can use your birth certificate and a government issued I.D. It is recommended that you do use a passport though just in case you miss the ship or have to fly back early for whatever reason.
If you leave the U.S. on a cruise to a different country, then a passport is required even though you are returning to the same port. You are leaving U.S territory and returning so, after the cruise you must go through customs which requires a passport.
Renee has it completely wrong.
